Montour County Coroner’s Office along with Milton PSP, Mahoning Township Police, Montour County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the death of 49 year old Vikki Wetzel from Berwick, PA.

Ms. Wetzel was returning to her car from her shift at Geisinger Medical Center in the Laboratory Medicine Department when she was shot multiple times resulting in her immediate death.

There is no danger to the public.

The incident occurred at 1704 hours on December 30, 2022 according to audio recovered from a private residence security system in the area.

The person of interest fled the scene in a dark SUV believed to be a Ford Edge according to video surveillance.

An autopsy is being scheduled with Forensic Pathology Associates of Allentown.

There will be a press release issue by the Columbia County Coroner Jeremy Reese concerning the person of interest.

It has been determined through law enforcement and negotiations with the Montour County coroner’s office, as stated by Reese, that the accident that occurred on Route 42 and the deceased are connected to the death investigation that took place 45 minutes earlier at Geisinger Medical Center.

According to the report from the coroner, the crash that occurred on Route 42 only involved one vehicle. After the automobile caught fire while it was parked next to the deceased, an adult male was ejected from the vehicle and received injuries related to the heat.

According to Reese, the male victim also displayed symptoms consistent with a gunshot wound, which most likely occurred previous to the collision.

Lynn stated that Wetzel worked in the Laboratory Medicine Department at Geisinger Medical Center during his time there as an employee. Lynn stated that police analyzed the video and noticed what they believe to be a dark-colored SUV that was nearby and suspected to be a Ford Edge.

Lynn has stated that there is no danger to the general public.

Andrea Jacobs, a spokesperson for the state police, stated that the state police are continuing their investigation into the shooting.

“It is believed to be an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public at this time,” she said. “More information will be released as the investigation continues.”

The footage from the parking lot cameras was examined by the authorities in order to obtain further information on the suspect.

Lynn, together with Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rosemary Leeming and Chief Nurse Crystal Muthler, stated that authorities and Geisinger combed the hospital before returning to normal operations, despite the fact that it was highly unlikely that the suspect was still present within.

During the investigation into the incident that took place at Geisinger Medical Center, numerous police vehicles from departments located around the Valley responded to the scene.
